How this list is built

  1. The full set.Every Marvel movie, series, special and short we could track down, from the 1944 Captain America serial to now. Road to Doomsday is the shorter list for the next Avengers movie, in the same order.
  2. Story time, not release date. Each title sits where its story happens. Shows set in their own present sit at the year they premiered, and a long-running show sits at its first season.
  3. The MCU follows Marvel’s timeline.Marvel’s official Disney+ order, Netflix shows included, with three changes for strict story dates: Iron Man 3 before Thor: The Dark World, The Fantastic Four: First Steps at 1964, and Deadpool & Wolverine after Logan. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the other Marvel TV shows are slotted by their story years, with notes where an episode ties into a film.
  4. Revivals sit with what they continue.X-Men ’97 picks up right after the ’90s cartoon, so it sits in 1997 even though it came out in 2024.
  5. Runtimes.Films use official running times. Series show the total of all their episodes. A “~” marks an estimate, worked out from the episode count and a typical episode length, mostly for older TV and animation.
  6. Credits scenes.Called for every film and Marvel Studios series. Older TV and most animation didn’t do credits scenes, so those rows leave the credits column blank.
  7. Left out.Documentaries and recap shows (Marvel Studios: Assembled, Marvel Studios: Legends, Marvel’s 616, Marvel’s Hero Project), motion comics, unaired pilots, Funko and parody web shorts, the Super Sentai co-productions (Battle Fever J, Denjiman, Sun Vulcan), and adaptations of Marvel imprint comics without Marvel heroes (Men in Black, Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Argylle, Powers, Criminal).

The X-Men’s two timelines

Days of Future Past is the hinge: in 2023, Logan’s mind is sent back to 1973 and rewrites history. Films before it are the original timeline. The films after it are the revised one, so the list jumps back to 1983 for Apocalypse right after it.
